This powder has the property of giving to the
gums a fine rose colour, which lasts ibr a considerable part
of the day.

Powder.

* Though it is certain there are many formulas of pow-
ders used for cleaning the teeth, they may all be comprised
in three classes. The first is the strongest, and comprehends
substances which are neither improper nor inconvenient in
their use I put in the second class, such as are hurtful to the
;
teeth, either by their nature, by wrong proportions in com-
bining them, or their bad preparation ; the third class em-
braces a small number of substances prepared and combined
with discernment, and very proper to be used about the teeth
and gums."
The formula which I am going to give, J have corrected
by such as are most in vogue ; I have neutralized the excess
of acid, which tends to make the teeth sensible, and to change
their colour most ; I have augmented the quality, by the ad-
dition of bark, and of aromatics.
