quantities to suit their wants, by keeping just proportions.
When this powder is wanted to be made use of, a small quan-
tity is put on a fine sponge a little moistened with water,
with which the teeth are rubbed."
Powder to Cleanse and Whiten the Teeth*
" Take 3vi of pumice stone, well calcined and reduced to
powder. This powder is passed on the porphyry stone, moist-
ened from time to time with rose-water, or that of myrtle ; it
is dried again to reduce it to an impalpable powder, and the
following ingredients put in: Plate Lac, Dragon's Blood,
Dried Bone, Bole Armenic, of each, 3 iij ; Cinnamon, Cloves,
Florentine orris, Rock Alum calcined, of each 3 i, all reduced
to a subtile powder. It is used with a prepared root, in which
the brush is dipped in this powder."
Another Powder for the same Use, and for strengthening
the Gums.
Take Red Coral, and Tartar of wine, of each, 3vi,
Dragon's Blood, Dried Bone, and
Bole Armenic, of each 3i,
Cloves, Cinnamon, Florentine orris, and
White Salt, of each, 3 iij.
The whole ought to be well mixed, reduced to powder, and
passed through a sieve of the finest cloth.
This powder is used at the end of a root, made as a little
brush, or with a small piece of very fine sponge, a little moist-
