TO THE SECOND EDITION.

In presenting to the public a second edition of this
work, the author cannot but express his gratitude to
those who have honored it with their patronage, and
especially to the eminent Medical Gentlemen who have
deemed it worthy of their recommendatory notice, and to
the press for the kind manner it treated the first edition.
Since the publication of the work, only two years
since, a large edition has been disposed of. This ap-
proving testimony of public approbation, encourages
the author to renew his humble efforts. For some
years previous to its publication, the plan of it had
been in his mind, and he embraced every opportunity
in pursuing his Medical and Dental studies, to make
notes, and collect materials for it ; in consequence
of which, he has not found it necessary to make any
material alterations in this edition. Some of his
friends have objected to the size of the work, as detract-
ing its utility, on the score that it prevents a more gene-
ral circulation and perusal ; but a majority of them have
cordially approved the plan of it. Indeed the author is
of opinion, that the objection is not valid, inasmuch as
he has so arranged the work, that the reader may find
the information he desires under its appropriate head,.
