rators, in using this instrument, contrive to make a
fulcrum of the thumb or one of the fingers ; which is
the preferable way.



HOOKS.


These are formed so that the point shall embrace
the root and remove it, without resting on the sur-
rounding parts. The root is removed simply by

pressure, applied in the proper direction. Of the
various forms of this instrument, there are the for-
ward hook, the backward (Fig. 77), and the com-
pound (Fig. 78), which last includes the former two.











These are valuable instruments, but require care in
order to avoid injuring the surrounding parts.
