140 PREPARATION OF CAVITIES

Technic for Beveling and Polishing Enamel Margins.

Chisels of razor-like sharpness are the instruments indi-
cated in the majority of cases. The bevel should always be a
definite one, and on straight lines, not curved. If the chisel is
of proper sharpness, the margins may be sufficiently smoothed

and polished. When two margins join each other at an angle,
the angle should he slightly rounded, being careful to leave the
definite line angle in the underlying dentin. For gingival
margins, Black's gingival trimmers are constructed so as to
give the proper bevel. These may also be used on buccal,
labial and lingual margins, or else the Black enamel

hatchets.
Technic.—Bevel with chisels the margins of the cavities in
the plaster cubes illustrating the various mortise forms; also
those prepared in the plaster and extracted teeth, as well as
on the technic block.

5. Perform the Toilet of the Cavity.—The manipulations
^
incident to performance of the toilet of the cavity may be
outlined as follows
1. Remove all debris with the chip blower and warm air.
2. Inspect the cavity for any remaining decay, which
should be removed, if found.

3. Swab the w^alls throughout with dry cotton or spunk,
thus loosening any further debris; then use the air syringe
again, thoroughly drying the walls.
If sterilizing agents are, or have been used, swab the
4.
walls with alcohol, evaporate and dry again with cotton, and

then freshen up the surfaces with a sterile bur before filling.
If, after completion of the cavity preparation, a dress-
5.
ing is sealed in until the next sitting, freshen up the walls
with a sterile bur again before insertion of the filling.
6. All fillings should be placed against clean, freshly cut

walls.
