PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION

The first edition of this work having been exhausted, the
writer is enabled to comply with the numerous requests for a

new edition that have been received from teachers and practi-
tioners in the United States and abroad. During the past
few years dentistry has made rapid and wonderful advance-
ment, and the courses in the dental schools have been greatly
enlarged, hence it has been deemed wise to re-arrange the
subject matter and to enlarge the scope of the work to include

the more recent thought and development in technical
procedure.
New chapters have been added describing in full the tech-
nical details incident to the examination of the patient, ex-

clusion of moisture, use of the matrix, separation of the teeth
and similar procedures. The chapter on the treatment of
vital and non-vital pulps has been considerably enlarged to
include the recent advances in handling cases of this nature
and an entire new chapter has been included on the diagnosis

and treatment of diseases of the periapical tissues. The work
has also been considerably enlarged by the addition of nu-
merous illustrations including many original photographs,
drawings, and radiographs.
A discussion of the causes and pathology of the various

disease manifestations is not attempted to any extent in this
book, as that phase of the subject is fully covered in books on
dental pathology. The work therefore may be especially
considered a technic manual for the busy practitioner and
student.
