oviter ends of the enamel rods have been broken away in grinding-. Notice particularly the flamelike
tongues of penetration sweeping toward the dento-cnatnel junction, following the lines of the length of
the enamel rods. Also the penetration on the margins of the principal area are seen to follow the
lines of the length of the enamel rods. This rigid following of the enamel rods is a characteristic of
caries of enamel beginning in smooth surfaces.
