heavy hammer. Tilting of the die, resulting sometimes
from a one-sided blow, may be obviated by placing a cone-
shaped piece of cast-iron, brass, or zinc over the die, the
base of the cone resting on the back of the die by this expe-

more directly over the die. If, in the process of stamping,
any portion of the plate is found cracking or parting, its
further extension at that point may be prevented by flowing
a little solder, as near the crack of the plate as possible at
the termination of the fissure.
