defined boundary.
Artificial Velum is the term for all appliances made to
snppiv the loss ()!' the posterior soft palate.
The different forms of appliances in general use are
known as King'ley's, Suerson's and Baker's.
Kingsley's Methods.—A simple obturator for hard pal-
ate, without teeth or clasps, is represented in Fig. J\ and is
intended for a perforation of the hard palate, being sus-

with which it comes in contact.
As Dr. Kingsley says of this, accuracy of adaptation and
dehcacy in form are all that is essential in such cases, and
the restoration of speech will follow.
Obturator for Soft Palate.—The construction of an obtu-
rator for the soft palate is much more complicated. Quot-
ing Dr. King'sley, the necessity for a variation in the plan
will be found in the anatomical fact of the constant muscular
