OBTURATORS AND ARTIFICIAL VELUM.
Palatine defects are divided into two classes, accidental
and congenital. The first includes all loss of substance in
either hard or soft palate by disease or accident after birth.

The second class includes all malformations of the palatine
organs, from the simple division of the uvula to an opening
through the entire palatine and maxillary bones, which may
exist at birth.

Obturator.—The term obturator, properly speaking, is
employed for all appliances intended to stop a passage in the
