Figs. 338, 339. A representation of the nature of the difficulty in the condensation of gold in a
direction perpendicular to the wall of a cavity, with special reference to filling with cohesive gold
against the gingival walls of proximal cavities in bicuspids and molars. In Figure 338, a perfectly
plane piece of gold plate is laid on an anvil and an instnunent placed as shown. This is struck a
blow that will bruise the metal plate. In Figure 339 the metal plate is curled away from the surface
of the anvil on all sides of the instrument point. No amount of hammering will bring it again to the
perfect fit. This will be the result in any eflort to condense a thin sheet of gold against any cavity
wall by pressure perpendicular to that wall. See Figures 344, 347, for the method of avoiding this
diffirultv.
