commended by some to place the forceps on the tooth,
and complete the circuit, as above, with the current
very feeble, and then gradually increase it to the
proper force for the operation. In some instances,
perhaps, this would be the preferable mode.
Another method of producing insensibility by an
electric current is, to place two moistened sponges,
connected with the two poles of the battery, on the
gum, one on each side of the tooth, keep them there
a few moments, and then operate. This method

tain its merits.
