PRELIMINARY TECHNICAL PROCEDURES
MOUTH HYGIENE AND ORAL PROPHYLAXIS-

EXAMINATION OF THE PATIENT


Mouth Hygiene and Oral Prophylaxis

Mouth Hygiene.—That branch of sanitary science which
treats of the health of the mouth, and its preservation.
Oral Prophylaxis.—That branch of dental science which

has for its object the preservation of the health and cleanhness
of the oral cavity; viz.: preventive dentistry.
The deposits occurring in the mouth may be mentioned as
follows, viz.
1. Calculus (Salivary and Serumal)

2. Food Debris (recent, fermenting or putrefying)
3. Dead Epithelial cells
4. Bacterial Plaques
5. Mucin
6. Green stain

7. Chromogenic Bacterial stains
8. Tobacco, tea, coffee and medicinal stains

As a result of these deposits, grave local and systemic dis-
turbances frequently arise. Among the local effects may be
mentioned caries, fetid breath, gingivitis, stomatitis, pyorrhea,
pulp diseases, alveolar abscess, pericementitis, osteitis, peri-
ostitis, osteomyelitis, bone necrosis, and diseases of the
antrum. The above mentioned conditions, present in the

mouth as a result of uncleanliness and infection, are designated
''
under the general term "Oral Sepsis.
