CALLOUS THICKENINGS OF THE GUMS. '207
But here the skill of the Surgeon, rather than that of
the Dentist, is required. (?)

(z) [The most common enlargement to which the gums are subject is
epulis. This consists of a fibrous or fibroplastic growth of the gum. It
generally commences between two teeth, but it may arise from the sur-
face of the jaw-bone. These tumours are very apt to return after
removal, and iu order to effect a permanent cure, it is often necessary to
remove the neighbouring teeth, when the sockets become absorbed,
and the epulis, if confined to these parts, gradually disappears.]
