GUM BOILS. 181)
It sometimes happens in these Gum Boils, that a fungus
will push out at the orifice, from a luxuriant disposition
to form granulations, in the inside of the abcess, and the
want of power to heal or skin ; the same thing frequently
happens in issues, where the parts have a disposition to
course this does not absolutely prove the case, inasmuch as many teeth
are lost from caries which yet never form an abscess or gum boil. Thus
of 72 central incisors extracted between the ages of 15 and 60 years, 53
belonged to the upper jaw of 117 lateral incisors 92 belonged to the
;
upper jaw ; and of 78 canines 58 belonged to the upper jaw. This
same preponderance of numbers in the upper jaw exists as regards the
bicuspids ; thus of 273 first bicuspids removed between the same ages,
207 belonged to the upper jaw, and of 434 second bicuspids 279 belonged
to the upper jaw. This relative liability of the loss of the teeth in the
two jaws is however reversed when we come to the molars : thus, out of
1,124 first molars, 644 belonged to the lower jaw, out of 637 second
molars, 388 belonged to the lower jaw, and out of 265 third molars 168
belonged to the lower jaw. These numbers are taken from the very
valuable tables given by Mr. Tomes in his Lectures on Dental
Physiology and Surgery.
The liability to the loss of certain teeth varies with the age of the
individual as shown in the following Table taken from the same
source.
