PREFATORY NOTE.
The demand for a new edition of this work has encour-
aged the author, while revising the text in accordance with
present day technic, to increase its size sufficiently to incor-
porate new material demanded by existing methods of teach-
ing, and to broaden its scope without materially altering its
form which, as evidenced by its sale, has proved so gen-
erally acceptable.
In its preparation, care has been taken to make it a sound
and conservative guide for the student in his study of the
subjects considered. Obsolete methods have been elim-
inated, and the multiplication of theories avoided, that the
dimensions of the work should be kept within convenient
limits. The needs of the student having thus been kept in
mind, it is presento'd-.a^ 'a convenient, every day working
book.
The author acknowledges his indebtedness to Professor
J.
Bird Moyer for valuable suggestions in the preparation of
the section on Metallurgy; also to Professor E. H. Angle
for the free use of illustrations from his work on Malocclu-
sion of the Teeth.
