The Philadelphia College of Dental Surgery, the first of that name, was
chartered in 1850, but five years prior to that time an attempt had been made
to procure a special act of the legislature of the state of Pennsylvania to in-
corporate a dental college, which was unsuccessful. The charter obtained in
1850 was the result of the efforts nf Hon. Jesse R. Burden, but the members
of the Pennsylvania Association of Dental Surgeons, who had failed in their
effort to obtain a charter in 1845, were not fullv satisfied to have such a charter
