During the last quarter of the nineteenth and the early j-ears of the present
century, England, Germany, France and America have been most active in
the practical and scientific phases of the work to which our professional stand-
ing is due and to the writers of these countries we are mainly indebted for
the productions that have enriched our literature. England has added Scw-
ell's "Dental Anatomy" (187G) "Dental Caries," by the same author (1884) ;
IlunterV and Balkwell's works on "Mechanical Dentistry" in 1878 and 1880
respectively: Stocken's "Materia Medica" (1878): works on "Dental Sur-
gery," Underwood (1880), Coleman (1881), and Barrett (1885); Tomes'
"Dental Anatomy" (188?) : Cole's "Dental Mechanics" (187r)) and "Deform-
ities of the Mouth," by the same author (1881) : and Quinby's "Notes on
J)pntal I'ractice" (1884).
Since 1885, new editions of many of the standard English dental works
have apjiearcd. In addition, the several departments of dentistrj' have re-
ceived attention as follows:
Operative Dentistry— Quinby, Grayston and Underwood.
Prosthetic Dentistry— I'earsall, Eose and Hunter.
Orthodontia —Colyer and Wallace.
Oral Surgery—Glassington and Eoughton.
Histologv and Microscopy—Mummery, Williams, Goadhy and Hopewell
Smith.
Dental Anatomy—Tomes, Constant, Underwood, Widdowsou and Gabell.
Tathology— Sewell, Smale, Eoughton, Pedley, Milles, Underwood, Colyer,
Turner. Fitzgerald, Nash and H. Smith.
Materia Medica, Chemistry and Metallurgy—Smith, Griffith, Fletcher and
Glassington.
France, during the early portion of this period, produced a great number
of works, covering a wide range of dental and kindred subjects. Maurel's
"Contributions on Dental Pathology" and "Injuries of the Teeth" appeared
in 1873 and 1875 respectively; Cruet's "Compendium of Dental Operations,"
in 1883. Many valuable contributions have been added by J. B. Aliadie, E.
