CLASSIFICATION OF MEDICINAL SUBSTANCES.
In order to impress the memory and facilitate investigation, it
is necessary that medicinal substances should be classified ac-
cording to their similarity of action on the animal economy, as
follows
Hypnotics and
Narcotics,
Anaesthetics,
I. Neurotics, or those which have a special
Antispasmodics,
action on and modify the functions of the Tonics,
Astringents,
nervous system. To this group belong :
Stimulants,
Sedatives,
Spinants.
Emetics,
2. EccRiTics, or those which have a special Cathanics,
Diaphoretics,
action on the secretions. To this group
Diuretics,
belong Blennorrhetics,
Emmenagogues.
3. Hemetics, or those which modify the blood. Hematinics,
Alteratives,

Demulcents,
Antiseptics,
4. Topical Remedies. To this group belong

Hypnotics and narcotics are medicinal substances which affect
the cerebral and spinal functions by impairing or destroying nerv-
ous action, having first a stimulant effect, to which their
therapeutic efficacy is in a great degree due. They allay cerebral
