Series of Clays and Enamels used for the Fabrication of
Incorruptible Teeth, in the Order of their Tints.
Paste, No. 1.
Kaolin ... 6 Ounces.
Earth of Vanvres - 1 Ounce 4 drachms.
Oxide of Titanium - 1-2 drachm, 4 grains.
Oxide of gold - - 1-8 grain, exact weight.*
Filings of Platina - 2 grains.
Put the earth of Vanvres on a plate, and grind it with the
muller ; add the oxides and filings of platina and grind again
at length, when these ingredients are fine and well amalga-
mated, add, by little and little, the kaolin ; continue to grind,
until they are all exactly mixed, and make a very fine and
very unctuous clay.
At length, when the substances are sufficiently divided and
mixed, which may be known when the particles can be felt
no longer under the muller, and of an extreme fineness, this
clay is put in a vessel of porcelain, for which a whalebone
knife is to be used.
It is advantageous, as we have already remarked, to keep
the clay in a cellar, which considerably improves it.
I believe it my duty to make known, that to make a quan-
titity of paste or enamel, it takes a workman one day's work.
* I understand by exact, that the two plates of the scale remain in equi-
librium, and by good weight, that in which the oxide is in bears down the
other, which is indicated by the weight.
