of the mouth and teeth, then to wash the mouth and teeth
with water of a temperature which shall be agreeable to
them, so as to make them clean, for the astringent is apt to
dirty the teeth, or give them a dark colour, if not washed off
in the most particular manner. To complete the cleaning
of the teeth, and to render them clean and beautiful, they
should be washed with a brush, and some tooth-powder pos-
sessing some mechanical properties, as for instance, a den-
tifrice having a little prepared chalk in it, &c. and rub the
teeth with this and a soft piece of leather or brush, and you
will reader the teeth very clean, take off the peculiar yellow
colour which is occasionally seen, and render them, in most
cases, from being dark and repulsive to the observer, to be
clean, white, and beautiful. The eye will rest upon them
with pleasure. The acknowledgments of our patients, espe-
cially females, will be of the most flattering and agreeable
nature. We shall not only receive their thanks and patron-
age, but have the pleasure of reflecting, that we have ren-
dered them an essential service.

Of the Good Effects resulting from this Operation, and the
Symptoms by which we know that it is effectually per-
formed.


One of the first effects of the proper performance of this
operation which we shall notice, will be a return of health
to the gums : their inflamed, swollen, spongy, and bleeding
condition will, in the course of from three to eight, or twelve
days, with the use of the astringent wash, become entirely
altered. The swelling and inflammation will immediately
subside, and from an angry red colour we shall soon notice a
mild florid appearance, and no pain or uneasiness will be per-
ceived about them. From being spongy and ready to bleed
