spoonfuls to a pint of warm sage tea or water, may be used
frequently through the day.
" Take of clarified honey and of the tincture of bark two
ounces each, mix and use as above.
" Take of honey and the tincture of rhattania two ounces
each, mix and dilute as above.
" Take of honey and the tincture of catechu one ounce
each, mix and dilute as above."
These are the different preparations which Mr. Koecker
directs to be used during the day of extracting the teeth
some of these preparations, by way of experiment I have
used, and have not been as well pleased with them as the fol-
lowing :
Take the inner bark of young green oak two pounds, to
this add water six quarts, put all into some suitable vessel
and boil it for several hours, and if necessary, add an addi-
tional quantity of water ; after the water becomes fully im-
pregnated with the qualities of the bark, this last may be
taken out and the liquor boiled so as to have two quarts, which
should be strained and put in a glass bottle. This liquor gen-

other remedy I have been able to procure, with the exception
of the decoction of the nut-gall, which is still more powerful.
I have found that fresh green oak bark was much better than
the same bark when it had been kept dry for some time.
This wash used freely for eight or ten days will generally
prove of the greatest utility. However, some of the prepar-
ations recommended by Mr. Koecker, or some other gentle
astringent may be used with great advantage. The one I
have mentioned has always proved so effectual in my prac-
