Firstly, Caries : which signifies a decay of some part of the
substance of the tooth.
Secondly, Exostosis of the Fangs by which is meant a
:
growth or deposition of bone upon them, and, consequently,
they are rendered larger, and press against the internal sides
of the socket, occasioning great pain to the patient, and ren-
dering the loss of the tooth inevitable.
Thirdly, Necrosis : by which is meant the death of some
part of the fang of a tooth.
Fourthly, Spina Ventosa : by which is meant a disease of
the membrane lining the internal part of the fang, accompa-
nied with a discharge of matter.
Fifthly, Removal of the enamel by the denuding process.
Sixthly, Fractures of the teeth.
Seventhly, Wearing down of the teeth in mastication.
The diseases of the soft parts will be taken up after consid-
ering the diseases of the teeth.





SECTION I.

CARIES.

It was well observed by *Monton, " that caries and tartar
were the two grand agents that give business to the Dentists.
At the head of these is caries, one of the most common and
most formidable diseases to which the teeth are subject ; in-
deed so little are they liable to any other affections, that if it
were not for caries they would be among the most healthy
organs of the system
