LARGE PROXIMAL CAVITIES ENDANGERING PULP 71

be built ill Avith a proximal surface slightly convex to the prox-
imal. However, this is but a makeshift of a filling and the result-
ing proximal space Avill always be defective.
Toilet of the Cavity. In large decays, particularly if the pulp
has been removed, there is more or less danger in leaving coatings
of various materials clinging to the walls. Care should be taken
that the walls are scrupulouslj^ clean. It is an advantage if the
cavity be scrubbed Avith solvents for the suspected coatings. The
cavity should then be dried, the enamel Avails planed and the cav-
ity freed of all debris.
Over-desiccation. Particular care should be had not to use ex-
cess desiccation in pulpless teeth as this Avill render them brittle
and easy of fracture Avhen put to use.
